UTPS FAQs

Q: How do I become a member of UTPS?

A:
If you are a University of Toronto student, staff or alumnus, you automatically qualify as a member of the group and are invited to join our Yahoo list.

Q: How do I get onto the Yahoo list?

A:
Simply go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ut_pagans/, click 'Join this Group' and answer the questions that follow. Your membership will be approved by the Execs on the condition that you provide us with your @utoronto.ca email address. An automated message will be sent to the address you used to subscribe pending your approval.

Q: Why am I required to provide an @utoronto.ca
email address?

A.
All UofT students and staff from all campuses are given @utoronto.ca email addresses, and alumni are still given control of them after graduation. The address confirms your relationship to UofT and legitimizes your membership.

Q: I got booted from the list! What happened?

A:
So far, we have never had to kick any delinquent posters off the list. You were probably removed because the Execs performed a list purge, usually before each new semester (i.e. twice a year, in September and January). They do this to remove members who joined and have stopped paying attention. Special notices are sent out to all list members asking them to respond and to confirm their desire to remain on the list. Members who do not reply before a certain date are considered to have stopped reading the list completely and are removed.

You may manually unsubscribe yourself from the list at any time, and instructions are given on the Yahoo board or at the bottom of each message if you receive them by email.

Q: I am a University of Toronto at Mississauga (UTM) or Scarborough (UTSC) student. Can I still join the list and attend UTPS events?

A:
Yes. UTPS welcomes new members from all three campuses. You are given an @utoronto.ca address and may use it to validate your membership and join our message board. However, all of our events are based at St. George campus, and you will have to provide your own transportation to and from any event you would like to attend.

Q: I am not a University of Toronto student, staff or alumnus at any campus. Can I still join the list and
attend events?

A:
Being a student-run school-associated club, UTPS is only open to UofT associates. The only others we permit are the Executives of other University Pagan Societies in Ontario, and friends of the Society who run Pagan community outreach events in the city of Toronto.

Non-UofT people may attend events as guests of UTPS members in good standing, with the permission of the Executives. We do not encourage this as a regular practice.

Q: I am not with UofT, nor am I a Toronto committee leader, but I am a person in search of:

1) More information about Paganism.

A: In addition to the large number of quality links available on our website, the Internet contains many informative sites if you look carefully and judge wisely. Conduct searches on any number of Pagan terms and you'll be greeted with thousands of results. Many of these sites offer great book lists for beginners.

2) Other Toronto/Ontario Pagan groups.

A: Witchvox.com runs a community listing of thousands of Pagan groups scattered across North America, and Ontario boasts its own share. If you are a student, your own institution may host its own Pagan group like UTPS.

3) Contacting the Executives to provide information about Toronto events.

A: UTPS always welcomes new information about events going on around the city. You may email us at ut_pagans@yahoo.com with any Pagan-friendly event you hear of or are hosting.

Q: What is the Voters List?

A:
In addition to the ut_pagans Yahoo list, a separate list exists for UTPS members who have attended three (3) or more events during the current academic year. On this list, these members are eligible to vote on political matters in UTPS, including the approval of Constitutional changes and new Executive members. The Execs keep a record of the attendees of every event and add members’ names to the list as they qualify, until the close of the winter school term in April. The list is wiped clean the following September. If you would like to have a say in the workings of UTPS, you are encouraged to come out and participate!
